Are you a seasoned teacher? Do you LOVE the middle school years? Are you passionate about access to education? If so, teaching at Daufuskie Island Independent School may be for you!.

Located just off the coast of South Carolina, Daufuskie Island is accessible only by ferry. With approximately 550 full-time residents and currently only a PreK-5 school on the island, secondary school students either travel an hour-and-a-half each way to and from school or they participate in virtual programs. Understanding the challenges of both of these situations, we are piloting a model of community-supported education that will help us provide a private education that is accessible to every middle school student on the island, while simultaneously strengthening our community.

This opportunity is open to anyone, but may be an especially good fit for a retire-rehire candidate. It is expected to be 25-30 hours a week with a more flexible afternoon schedule. All core-subject teaching will take place before lunch, leaving the afternoon open for lesson planning and teacher collaboration.

A hallmark of our community-supported model will be teacher training. We recognize that Daufuskie Island Independent School will be as successful as its students are. Our curriculum is being developed and will be delivered in an inquiry-based model where each lesson begins with a question. Teachers will guide the students through the steps of structured learning, guided learning, applied learning, and reflection. Classroom sizes are anticipated to be between five and seven students.

The English teacher will be responsible for teaching grades six, seven, and eight English and will also assume the role of mentor to our younger, new teachers. While the principal will be mainly tasked with curriculum development & implementation, as well as teacher training, the English teacher will act as a lead teacher and should be available to assist new teachers in lesson planning or classroom management, when requested.

Minimum requirements: a bachelor’s degree, five years teaching experience with several years in an inquiry based model preferred. Desirable traits: a team player, flexible, able to connect with middle schoolers, passion for our vision. This position will be considered less than full-time and does not come with benefit or retirement plans.
