Located just off the coast of South Carolina, Daufuskie Island is accessible only by ferry. With ~550 full-time residents, DI is detached from the bustle of the mainland. We are known for our tight-knit community, abundant wildlife, and empty beaches. Daufuskie is magical.

Daufuskie Island Independent School (DIIS) welcomed its first classes of students in August of 2023. Before our opening, students desiring an in-person school experience had to travel an-hour-and-a-half each way by golf cart, ferry, and bus to get to school. DIIS has afforded the opportunity for students to stay on the island for school and to grow in their connection to Daufuskie’s community. Come participate in the unique and exciting dynamic of growing access to educational opportunities! Positions are semester or year long; both fall and winter semester positions are available. Associate Teachers will be trained and mentored by educators from public, private, and international systems.

Associate Teachers will oversee their own classrooms and will be responsible for teaching grades six, seven, and eight in their respective discipline. We are committed to providing excellent experiences and outcomes for our students, which means we are committed to developing YOU! Our resources are focused on this. Our principal’s job is centered around curriculum development & implementation and teacher training. With small class sizes, this is a perfect place for young teachers to learn to teach. Come see the education world in a whole new light.
