To ensure families understand both the opportunity and commitment coming to the island each day is, in-person interviews are preferred. Interviews are a great opportunity to meet the principal, speak more in depth about our curriculum, and discuss the expectations for students and families.
Daufuskie Island Independent School is committed to creating a safe, nurturing atmosphere for students to develop and grow. To accomplish this, each member of the school community must agree to embrace the principles of character outlined in the following Student Pledge:
I will esteem all people–along with myself, my school, and my surroundings–with respect and dignity.
I will use language that is uplifting and supports those around me.
I will seek to learn from others and recognize how each person adds to the tapestry of a community.
I will come to school each day ready to put my best effort forward and remember that success is not measured by perfection, but by progress, and that difficulty is an integral part of growth.
I will be honest in all my dealings.
I recognize that I am a representative of DIIS and that my actions, both on and off campus, reflect the school and the investment our community has made in me. I pledge to be polite to and thoughtful of those with whom I come in contact.
I pledge to strive to make the world a better place through my kindness and actions.

At the heart of Daufuskie Island Independent School is a commitment to make a high quality, rigorous education accessible to every middle schooler on the island. By generating revenue from other programs and through generous donors, tuition rates reflect a dollar amount far below the actual cost of educating each child. Due to lack of another in-person middle school education on-island, Daufuskie residents will receive an Access Scholarship, bringing the cost of tuition to half of the off-island normal rate of $10,000/year. Alternate paths to satisfying the tuition requirement will be available for families in need.
