This year we are honored to recognize Clarence Simmons, Nancy Ludtke, and Chris Hutton as DIIS’ 2024 Changemakers, individuals who have shaped the heart and future of Daufuskie.
Honoree: Clarence Simmons
Clarence Simmons, a native of Daufuskie Island, is known for his vast contributions to the island’s infrastructure and hospitality. From building the roads we traverse daily to helping visitors in need, Clarence’s work and spirit have left an indelible mark on the community. Always quick with a laugh and a warm smile, Clarence embodies the true spirit of Daufuskie — generous, hardworking, and deeply connected to the island’s essence.
Honoree: Nancy Ludtke
For over 35 years, Nancy Ludtke has called Daufuskie Island home and has built meaningful relationships across the community. As a founder of the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation, Nancy has worked tirelessly for over 25 years to preserve and share the island’s rich history. Alongside her late husband, Fred, Nancy has consistently supported the youth of Daufuskie, attending school activities and sharing her wisdom with the younger generation. Her dedication and warmth have made her an invaluable part of the community.
Honoree: Chris Hutton
Chris Hutton’s legacy on Daufuskie Island is profound. He played a key role in developing much of the island’s existing infrastructure, from docks and sewers to building and fire codes. Chris was instrumental in creating the Daufuskie Island Fire District and establishing the Palmetto Breeze passenger system, improving daily life for residents. Known for his generosity and ability to connect with everyone, Chris was always ready to lend a helping hand. As one community member said, “Chris helped everybody. If he couldn’t do it himself, he knew who could!”
